Financial Incentives
There are several financial incentives and resources available to the owners of historic properties in the District of Columbia.
The Targeted Historic Preservation Assistance Amendment Act of 2006 created the first DC assistance program for historic preservation. The Historic Homeowners Grant Program targets 12 historic districts providing financial assistance for certified rehabilitation work. A pilot program in the Anacostia Historic District was completed in 2008. The program has since expanded to all 12 eligible districts.
There are two major preservation tax incentives available under federal law. Federal Rehabilitation Tax Credits are available for substantial rehabilitation of income-producing structures listed in the National Register of Historic Places either individually or as part of a historic district.
Owners of National Register properties and historically important land areas may also donate conservation easements to approved easement holding organizations. Owners may receive tax benefits for the gift of Historic Preservation Easements.
The DC Historic Preservation Office is responsible for the administration of federal grant funds provided by the National Park Service under the National Preservation Act of 1966 to carry out preservation activities and each year HPO awards a portion of the funds through its Community Grants Program to nonprofits and government agencies.
